Admiral Lord St. Vincent Saint or Tyrant?

Admiral Lord St. Vincent Saint or Tyrant?
A much deserved biography of Admiral John Jervis, Lord St VIncent, the man who not only mentored Nelson, but also defended Britain from Napoleonic invasion, and laid the foundations for a century of British maritime global supremacy
If Nelson is the undisputed British Naval hero of the Napoleonic Wars, then the subject of this important biography certainly deserves second billing. Admiral John Jervis, ennobled as Lord St. VIncent after his most famous victory, not only mentored Nelson, protecting him from the professional jealousy that might have ended his brilliant career; he was also the man responsible for defending Britain from the real danger of a cross-Channel French invasion, telling his fellow Admiralty Lords : ‘My Lords, I do not say the French cannot come. I only say they cannot come by sea' - (which, in the age before the aeroplane, was pretty definitive!) Two decades older than his protege - and surviving for another two after Trafalgar, - Jervis, in his post as First Lord of the Admiralty, ended the endemic corruption, cruelty and nepotism that had weakened the Navy for centuries and laid the foundations for a century of Britain's unchallenged global naval supremacy. He thor oughly deserved a full biography, and James Davidson's book brings him out from under the giant shadow cast by his little protege.
