BATTLE FOR QUEBEC 1759
A full-blooded account of the Anglo-French battle to win control of Quebec and with it of all Canada. Behind the chivalry of rival Generals Wolfe and Montcalm - who both famously fell during the battle - lay a cruel and progressively more brutal war, brilliantly described in this revealing book.
The British may have lost the American War of Independence, but a famous earlier victory during the Seven Years' War with France gave them a very large consolation prize on the continent in the shape of Canada. That victory was secured by the much-criticised General James Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec, and resulted in the French losing control of that city, and ultimately of the whole of Canada. This book tells the story of the Quebec campaign - and although both Wolfe and his French opposite number, the Marquis de Montcalm, fell mortally wounded in the battle, their achievement was lasting. Wolfe established his country as the dominant force in North America until the advent of the US, while Montcalm's gallant resistance to British attacks ensured the survival of the stubbornly independent. French community in Quebec to this day. Matthew Ward, an expert on the subject, tells the story of the campaign, with its clashes amongst squabbling commanders, the alliances formed with the local Iroquois Indian tribe, and the life”s of ordinary soldiers and sailors. Its's an eye-opening book on an important but sadly neglected subject.
