CAP OF HONOUR: The 300 Years of the Gloucestershire Regiment
A complete unit history of one of the British army's proudest names - the ‘Glorious Glosters', whose 300 years of battle honours from 1694 to 1994 runs from Quebec to the Imjin RIver in the Korean War and beyond.
Of the many county regiments of the British Army with a proud history, the ‘Glorious Glosters' boast a record second to none. For 300 years the regiment accrued more battle honours than any other Line Regiment : exemplified by their famous privilege of wearing two cap badges - to the front and back - in honour of the Regiment's part in the Battle of Alexandria in 1801, when it repulsed simultaneous attacks from the front and rear. First raised in 1694, the Regiment fought with Wolfe at Quebec, with Wellington in the Peninsular and at Waterloo, in India, the Crimea and the Boer War. In the First World War the Glosters fought in France, Flanders, Gallipoli, Macedonia and Italy and in Europe and Burma in the Second. The Glosters' most famous finest hour, however, came in the Korean War of the early 1950s when they defended the imjin River line against overwhelming odds. In 1994 the regiment was merged with the neighbouring counties to form the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment, and the Glosters' individual identity ended. David Scott Daniell has written a fine and moving tribute to a great and glorious military unit.
