CAVALRYMAN IN THE CRIMEA The Letters of Temple Godman, 5th Dragoon Guards

The Letters of Temple Godman, 5th Dragoon Guards
A young cavalry officer's letters home from the Crimean War. Written with vivid frankness, Temple Godman's descriptions cover battles ( he charged at Balaklava) hospitals, the deficiencies of the high command and press reporting - along with the pain and sorry of losing comrades. Remarkably Godman took three horses to the war - and brought all three back unscathed.
Eye-witness descriptions from soldiers serving in the Crimean War are a relative rarity, which makes this collections of letters home written by a young cavalry officer who served throughout the conflict especially valuable. Their author, Temple Godman, went to the Crimea with the 5th Dragoon Guards and took part in the successful Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava ( less celebrated than the heroic but bungled Charge of the Light Brigade in the same battle). His letters to his family in Surrey cover all aspects of the conflict with refreshing and vivid frankness, including the deficiencies of the higher command, criticism of inaccurate press reports of the war, and the conditions in hospitals where Florence Nightingale's nurses worked. He describes more light-hearted aspects of frontline life, including hunting wild dogs, smoking Turkish tobacco along with the pain of seeing comrades succumb to wounds or disease. Above all, as a cavalrryman Godman is concerned with his horses. Remarkably he took three of them out to the Crimea, and bought all three home unscathed.
