CRASH DIVE. IN ACTION WITH HMS SAFARI 1942-43

CRASH DIVE. IN ACTION WITH HMS SAFARI 1942-43
The author joined HMS Safari while she was still under construction in January 1942, was with her on her first commission in the following March and remained with her until July 1945. This is the story of eighteen months of war patrols in the Mediterranean between March 1942 and September 1943 during which time Safari sailed some 31,300 nautical miles, spent 139 days submerged, fought 58 actions against Axis shipping and sank 34 ships totalling 85,000 tons Her first captain was Commander Ben Bryant, one of the top scoring submarine aces of the war who ended his career as Rear Admiral with DSO and two bars and the DSC. Arthur Dickson was Leading Telegraphist, a privileged position in the crew which gave him access to all signals traffic, and with the navigation officer as his immediate superior Arthur was afforded a unique insight into daily operations. He kept a diary throughout, despite orders to the contrary, and it is in diary form that the book is written, a marvellous record of life in a submarine at war as seen from the ‘lower deck'.
