Evelyn Wood VC Pillar Of Empire

Evelyn Wood VC
Pillar Of Empire
This major military biography fills an important gap in the writing of Victorian military history. Sir Evelyn Wood VC was not only a heroic soldier, but an important reformer who helped shape the professional army that showed its mettle in 1914.
Sir Evelyn Wood VC was an archetypal Victporian soldier - a product from the same heroic mould that produced Gordon, Wolseley, Roberts and Kitchener. Wood's military career began in the Navy in the Crimean War before he transferred to the cavalry to ‘see more action' as he put it. This fire-eating attitude won him his VC in India, and he became a member of Sir garnet Wolseley's select Ashanti Ring. His great victory over the Zulus at Kambula came the day after an almost equally terrible defeat at Hiobane, which he managed to cover up. Criticised for his ruthless slaughter of the defeated enemy, he was aided by friends in high places - including Queen Victoria herself - although he was also dogged by the scandal surrounding his sister Kitty O'Shea, whose adulterous affair with the Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell horrified respectable Victorian Britain. Wood's career continued to prosper, however, culminating in his appointment as Adjutant General and his promotion to Field-Marshal. His reforms in his post helped lay the foundations for the professional performance of the Army in the early stages of the Great War. This first biography of an important - yet neglected - figure fills a major gap in the bibliography of Victorian military history.
