Hart's Annual Army List 1860 lists Major Mackinnon's war service as follows:Major Mackinnon served with the 16th Lancers in the campaign in Afghanistan of 1838-39 under Lord Keane, and was present at the siege and capture of Ghuznee (Medal). Served also throughout the Sutlej Campaign of 1845-6, and was present at the affair of Buddiwal (charger killed under him by a roundshot), and battles of Aliwal and Sobraon (Medal and Clasp).
