If Alamein was the Eighth Army's finest hour, Barrie Barnes argues in this meticulous book that the battle of the Wadi Akarit did not fall far short of that triumph. It was the last great pitched battle between the 8th and their old adversaires, the German Panzer Armee Afrika. Barnes has interviewed many battle survivors from gunners, sappers and army chaplains to Spitfire pilots and front-line infantrymen. The single day's action cost the 8th Army six-hundred dead, and three times that number maimed and wounded - but it forced the Afrika Korps to retreat, and, the author argues, only Montgomery's failure to attack earlier with his armour prevented the retreat from becoming an utter rout. Years in the making, this is a detailed and careful account of an often forgotten action, based on the words of the men who fought it.
